Joe Cleary

Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist

My name is Joe Cleary and I'm a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist. I work with adults one-to-one, and my approach is best suited to people who know that they need more than a short-term fix. I have over fifteen years and ten thousand hours experience, working with hundreds of people on a wide variety of issues, including but not limited to:

  • Anxiety, stress and burnout
  • Depression and bi-polar disorder
  • Physical symptoms e.g. pain
  • ADHD, ADD and OCD
  • Complex trauma
  • Anger Management
  • Relationship issues
  • Sexuality and Gender Identity
  • Infertility, miscarriage and post-natal depression
  • Bereavement and loss
  • Psychosis

My specific approach to psychotherapy - Psychoanalysis - looks deeply into the underlying causes of our difficulties to help us better understand our experiences and ourselves. It privileges the unconscious part of our minds – that part of everyone’s mind where, beginning in childhood, we hide knowledge of the things that overwhelm us. Out of sight doesn’t mean out of mind.

When you’re surprised by your own thoughts and actions, or get stuck in repetitive cycles you can’t break, a psychoanalytic approach can help you figure out the deeper logic behind your experiences. It's a powerful way to create enduring transformation in your life, empowering you to live more fully.

My extensive experience is gathered from working in psychiatric settings, charities and private practice with varying levels of distress and ill health. I studied and trained for seven years to do this work, earning a degree in philosophy and two Masters degrees in theory and practice. I'm fully insured and a Registered Practitioner member of the Association for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy in Ireland (APPI), and a member of the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP).
