Jennifer Johnston

Counsellor

I’m Jennifer, and I offer in-person counselling for adults at MindSpace in Belfast. You might be dealing with anxiety or grief, finding it hard to set boundaries, or trying to make sense of patterns in your relationships. My experience includes supporting people affected by domestic abuse, including coercive control and domestic violence, as well as other harmful relationships and difficult childhood experiences.

Safety is central to trauma-informed counselling. We’ll start by talking about what would help you feel safe and comfortable enough to share what’s brought you to counselling.

I hold a Foundation Degree in Integrative Counselling Practice from Ulster University and am a certified clinical hypnotherapist. Where appropriate, we can consider using focused attention and guided imagery to help you feel more settled when your body is on high alert. I’m also in the final stage of EMDR Europe-accredited training and currently offer a limited number of EMDR appointments at MindSpace under clinical supervision. Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) can help you process traumatic memories that are still distressing, including memories that affect how you feel or respond in everyday life.

In our sessions, we can explore how earlier experiences may help make sense of what’s happening now. We might also focus on something practical, like what makes it hard to say no. As we talk things through, we can make sense of what you’ve experienced and think about what you’d like to be different.
